multiplier effects from training to alternative development in the Thai Doi Tung project

The Doi Tung Development Project is located in the province of Chiang Rai, Thailand. It has been internationally recognized as a best practice example for alternative development through fostering economic growth and sustainable development in a former poppy-growing region.

Facilitated through a cooperation of the Thai Mae Fah Luang Foundation Under Royal Patronage (MFLF) with the Global Partnership on Drug Policies and Development (GPDPD), delegations from different countries have the opportunity to visit Doi Tung. During these study trips, participants exchange experiences in creating sustainable alternative livelihoods for people living from illicit drug crops cultivation by addressing its root causes, namely poverty and the lack of opportunities. Since 2016, government representatives, policy makers, local implementers and civil society leaders from Colombia, Peru, Nigeria and Myanmar have participated in these trainings.

According to the feedback from the participants, the success of a people-centered alternative development model is highly valued. In this sense, the most important impact of the trainings is the multiplication effect of the acquired knowledge. In an ex-post evaluation, all former participants stated that the content of the trainings had been taken into account in their day-to-day work - from the management level to the local staff in the field. Moreover, the lessons learnt had been widely shared with strategic partners, as well as with local organizations, communities and families.

This multiplication effect is depicted in the example below from Colombia: for one participant in the training, 40 more people were reached. The study visits to Doi Tung might hence contribute to the implementation of development-oriented drug policies across all regions and government layers of the partner countries.
